The Commission is guided by the Niagara Escarpment Planning and Development Act and the Niagara Escarpment Plan.

Active Plan Amendments

There are several active plan amendments under review at the Niagara Escarpment Commission.

Niagara Escarpment Plan (NEP)

Approved by Cabinet in 1985 and revised in 1994, 2005 and 2017, the Niagara Escarpment Plan is Canada’s first large-scale environmental land use plan.

Niagara Escarpment Planning and Development Act (NEPDA)

The Niagara Escarpment Planning and Development Act forms the legal basis for the Niagara Escarpment Plan and Niagara Escarpment Commission operations.

NEC Policies, Guidelines and Technical Criteria

The Niagara Escarpment Commission has adopted policies and guidelines to help with the interpretation and implementation of the Niagara Escarpment Plan.

Niagara Escarpment Plan Maps

These maps form part of the Niagara Escarpment Plan and must be read in conjunction with the NEP itself.

Use the interactive map to determine if your property is located within the NEP Area and/or Area of Development Control.

Application to amend the Niagara Escarpment Plan

Changes in policy or land use designation require an amendment to the text and/or appendices and maps of the NEP.  This process is outlined in sections 6.1, 7, 8, and 10 of the  NEPDA.

Niagara Escarpment Parks and Open Space System (NEPOSS)

The Niagara Escarpment Commission has adopted policies and guidelines to help with the interpretation and implementation of the Niagara Escarpment Plan.
